The sleeve of the 7"-single features a colour group picture (Pål, Mags and Morten) by Knut Bry, a green a-ha logo and titles in light blue. The reverse of the sleeve is white with titles in orange and green, a group shot and an advert for "Scoundrel Days". It features the album tracks "Cry Wolf" and "Maybe Maybe".

As with many of the 7" singles, there are versions available with different coloured labels including white, silver and green.

There is also a limited edition 7" which comes in a fold-out sleeve. The cover of this limited edition is the same as the regular 7" except for the text "Collectors Limited Edition Fold-Out Picture Bag" printed in white in the bottom left-hand corner of the sleeve. The reverse of the sleeve is also the same as the regular release except for "a-side" and "b-side" written in green rather than orange, black text under the titles. The tri-fold sleeve features three multi-colour 7"-sized a-ha pictures inside and a black and white group-shot on the inside flap.

The 12" has the same cover as the 7" except that the titles are written in blue in the bottom left corner and the text "Extended Version" is written under the title. It features the "Extended Mix" of "Cry Wolf" (8:11) remixed by Mags, Pål and Gerry Kitchingham.

Also available is the 12" limited edition picture disc, the a-side features the picture from the "I've Been Losing You" 7" cover plus a-ha's signatures printed in white and a red a-ha logo. The reverse of the disc has a group picture with a pink sky as background and the UK and Ireland tour dates 1986-87 printed on the bottom . The tracks on the picture disc are the same as on the 12".

Variations

Argentina: Promo 7" without picture sleeve which has "Next Time" by Peter Cetera on one side and "Cry Wolf" by a-ha on the other side. On the label, the tracks are printed in Spanish ("Grita Lobo") with the translation underneath. A large red WB-logo is printed at the top of the label and a large yellow "Venta Prohibida" (not for sale) across the middle.

Australia: The 7" has the same front sleeve as the UK release while the reverse of the sleeve is very similar to the reverse of the French 7" (see below) except for a tiny bit of text. The picture sleeve of the 12" is only marginally different from the U.S. edition (see below). The group-shot motive goes all the way to the top on the Australian issue, while there is a white stripe of just about the width of 1 centimetre at the top front of the U.S. picture sleeve.

Brazil: There is a Brazilian 12" promo featuring Cry Wolf. It comes in a black and pink WEA title sleeve.

Canada: The 7" and 12" releases are the same as the U.S. releases. There is also a Canadian promo 7" which comes in a white sleeve and is printed in the U.S.

France:

The 7" has slightly different titles with "a-ha Cry Wolf" written in black and green on a beige rectangle in the top left corner of the sleeve. The reverse of the sleeve is also slightly different omitting the "Scoundrel Days"-shot and the track listing.

Germany: The 7"-release has an identical front cover to the UK edition, while the reverse features a sleeve similar to the French edition, but without the wea-logo towards the bottom of the sleeve. The limited edition gate-fold was also released in Germany.
The limited edition 7" of "Cry Wolf" was used as a juke-box promo in Germany and comes with a small white and red wea paper insert for use in the juke-box.

Italy: The 7" has front sleeve the same as the UK and back sleeve very similar to the reverse of the French 7" (same as German 7"?). There is also an Italian juke box promo with b-side Nick Kamen - "Each Time You Break My Heart", which doesn't have a picture sleeve.

Japan: The 7" comes with a sleeve similar to its European counterparts. However the group-shot has been split up into three individual photos separated by white strips. The green capital lettered a-ha logo is placed in the upper left corner, while green and light blue lettered information on the tracks is written on a white background in Japanese and English in the lower part of the picture sheet. The reverse features a black and white group-shot, tour dates and sites for the Japanese leg, lyrics in both languages to "Cry Wolf" plus the obligatory album advert.
There is a Japanese white label acetate promo 7" which features "You Can Do Magic" by America and "Cry Wolf" by a-ha. It doesn't have a catalogue number and comes in a text sleeve. No further details.

Mexico: The promo 7" has "Cry Wolf" on both sides of the disc, it comes in a WEA sleeve.

 

Peru: The Peru 7" comes in a white Peruvian printed record sleeve with the text "EL VIRREY" INDUSTRIAS MUSICALES S.A. and an address printed in purple along the bottom.. The disc label is light brown with the tracks written in Spanish "Aulla Lobo" (Cry Wolf) and "Puede Ser, Puede Ser" (Maybe Maybe), with the English titles in smaller letters underneath. The promotional edition comes in a white paper sleeve has a white label with black text. The tracks are also printed in Spanish with the English translations underneath. The text "Disco de promocion prohibida su venta" is printed at the top of the label.

Philippines: This 12" release from the Philippines features the tracks "Cry Wolf" and "Maybe Maybe". It comes in a blue and yellow WEA text sleeve. "12 Inch Maxi Single" is printed in the top left hand corner whilst a brown-tone sticker featuring a shot of a-ha is printed in the top right. a-ha, Cry Wolf and Maybe Maybe are printed in respectively green, light blue and purple capital letters over the picture on the sticker. This 12" was released in 1987 under license of Warner Brothers and plays at 33RPM.

Portugal: The 7" has the same front cover as its UK counterpart. The reverse of the cover is similar to the French, but is printed in black and white and has a slightly different layout of the text.

South Africa: The 7" comes in a blue and red wea sleeve.

Spain: The 7" sleeve is almost identical to the German release. The promotional 7" has a similar sleeve to the regular release and has "Promocional Prohibida Su Venta" printed on the record label.

USA: The USA 7" has same front sleeve as UK and similar back sleeve to the French release (same as German 7"?), the promo copy has "Cry Wolf" on both sides of the disc. The 12" has a similar sleeve to the UK one except that there is a white strip along the top and bottom and has "specially-priced maxi-single" printed in green at the bottom and no "Extended Version" printed under the title. The reverse of the sleeve is plainer than the UK edition, with just the a-ha picture and tracks listed in green.
There is also a 12" promo which has the LP version of "Cry Wolf" on both sides and plays at 33.3 r.p.m. and comes without picture sleeve.

There are two different rare "Razormaid" promo 12" - records. One is a transparent orange vinyl, the other is a set of two clear vinyls. Both come in unique "Razormaid" sleeves which have holes punched in them, through which you can see the coloured inner sleeve. Tracks information is printed on the back of the inner sleeve which can be read through the holes. "razormaid" is printed in black above the punched holes on the front cover.
The orange edition has a silver / grey sleeve, through which you can see the black and white of the inner. The clear edition has a silvery blue sleeve, through which you can see the pink and grey of the inner sleeve.

Both discs feature a version of "Cry Wolf" produced by Joseph Watt (6:05) with BPM number 131. The orange vinyl features 3 other artists apart from a-ha (Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Billy Idol and B52's); the clear vinyls also feature David Harrow, Psychic TV, Microchipleague, 16 Bit and Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Billy Idol and B-52's. "Cry Wolf" is the second track on side A of disc 2. The disc sticker of the clear vinyl is grey with white text on pink rounded blocks.
